Press Release 29 November 2011 Neuron Bio presents in Brazil the advances made in its first research line against Alzheimer’s disease
Dr. Javier S. Burgos, director of the Neuron BioPharma division of Neuron Bio, gave a talk in the Biochemistry Department of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre (Brazil) on 23 November, in which he spoke about the advances made by this division of the company in their research into the neuroprotective compound NST 0037.
In his talk, entitled, “Developing a novel statin to prevent Alzheimer’s disease”, Dr. Burgos explained that as a result of their research Neuron Bio had discovered and demonstrated that statins (cholesterol reducing drugs) are able to prevent the neurodegeneration related to Alzheimer’s disease. As a result of their research, the division has patented a new statin that reduces cholesterol levels in the blood, prevents neuron death and protects against memory loss. Further to this, the BioPharma division is due to begin clinical trials with this compound during the coming year.
